#YesToHealthyBirth: Nurse Midwives Support Healthy Births

Earlier this year, the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), the professional organization for certified nurse-midwives and certified midwives, launched the Healthy Birth Initiative.™ The educational program equips women with information to increase their chance of having a healthy birth using their own natural physiology (ie, their bodies and internal processes) while avoiding unnecessary procedures that may interfere with that process. ACNM has developed educational materials and tools for all those involved in the birth process -- care providers, hospitals, policymakers, and perhaps most importantly, parents.

If you are pregnant, plan to be pregnant soon, or know someone important who is pregnant, we encourage you to read ACNM's free handout, "Normal, Healthy Childbirth for Women & Families: What You Need to Know." In this free, four-page guide, which is also supported by the March of Dimes and Lamaze, you will learn you can do to maximize your chance of having a healthy birth and minimize your chance of experiencing unnecessary medical interventions during childbirth. Key points covered include:

  1. What to expect during a normal birth
  2. Things that can disrupt a normal birth
  3. The importance behind choosing the right care provider and birth setting
  4. How midwives can support you in your goals

The handout is available in both English and Spanish. For more information on midwifery care, check out the resources available on Our Moment of Truth, an educational site provided by ACNM. To spread the word about these great resources from ACNM on social media, please use the #YesToHealthyBirth.
